Misia (Misaki Ito) was born 7 July 7, 1978, in Fukuoka and is an R&B singer who debuted in 1998 with the song Tsutsumikomu Youni. Misia is said to have a voice range that spans five octaves, and she is able to vocalize sounds that are too high for the human ear.
Wanting to become a singer from an early age, Ito won a contest in Fukuoka. While at school, she she sang and played the trumpet. She began training trainers in gospel and R&B, but failed her auditions at high school. Although Ito was accepted into Seinan Gakuin University, she decided to pursue a music career instead.
In 1997, after being turned down by a number of record compnakies, Ito passed a BMG Japan audition. This led to her first single, Tsutsumikomu Youni, which went to number eleven in the charts. Her second single, Hi no Ataru Basho" was used in the soundtrack of the movie 'hood. Her first album Mother Father Brother Sister went to number one and sold over a million copies in a few days.
The single I miss you ~Toki wo Koete~ was recorded with Dreams Come True and Masato Nakamura wrote the music with Misia supplying the lyrics. The single Kokoro Hitotsu was used as the theme song to the movie Dragon Head, and a number of Ito’s songs have been used as themes for games.
Ito is unusual in that she has never performed on TV music shows in Japan. In 2007, she announced that she would be leaviing avex trax to return to her former record label, BMG Japan.
