Trigun (Toraigan), was an animated series that began in 1998 and continued until April of 2007. Like many Japanese Anime's, Trigun began as a manga, which was then picked up to become an animated series. The animation migrated to the United States in 2003 and is currently still being run by a couple different channels, in the United States as well as other countries.

Trigun is the brain child of manga writer Yashuiro Nightow. After college he became a realtor and wrote manga in his free time. He was buoyed by the sale of some of his works and realized that he could support himself by writing manga. In 1995 he started writing the series that is Trigun for Shōnen Captain, a regular magazine in Japan. In 1997 the magazine was canceled, and the magazine known as Young King Ours approached Nightow to begin working for them. Nightow was distressed at having to leave Trigun unfinished, and requested that he be able to write the manga for their company as well. Young King Ours agreed. In 1998 the series truly began and was called Trigun Maximum. This is also when the animation of the series began.

Vash the Stampede is the main character of Trigun. The entire story has somewhat of a science fiction/cowboy feel, and you can consider Vash the cowboy. He is a tortured gunfighter, who can use his weapons to destroy very thoroughly, yet preaches love and understanding every where he goes. It is almost as if there are two sides to Vash. In the beginning of the series, we discover that Vash is a hunted man. A city known as July has been destroyed completely and utterly. The only person left alive is Vash. Because of this, it is assumed that Vash is the one who destroyed the city, even though he has no recollection of doing so. Due to this destruction, a bounty of 60,000,000,000$$ (Sixty thousand double dollars on the planet Gunsmoke, which is Vash’s home planet) is put on his head.

Two agents of the Bernadelli Insurance Company, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, confront Vash and tell him that the government has decided that he is an act of God, due to his consistent destruction of places, and that they have rescinded his bounty. Meryl and Milly then follow along behind Vash as he travels around, in an effort to minimize the damage Vash deals to the cities he visits. Occasionally a preacher, named Nicholas Wolfwood, travels with Vash. The two are both excellent gun fighters and have some hilarious dialogue together.

Vash gets into all sorts of trouble, from evading the Gung Ho Guns, a mysterious group of assassins, to battling with his brother, Million Knives, who turns out to be as evil as everybody thought Vash himself was. This beauty of an anime created by Nightow is not only action packed, but also makes the viewer ponder about moral codes, and what type of situation would have to occur that would force you to betray them.
