==History==

First opened in November of 1890, Akihabara’s original role was as a freight terminal linking [[Ueno Station]] to the [[Yamanote Line]]. Passenger trains first ran on the line in 1925 when the Ueno segment was linked to [[Shinbashi]] through [[Tokyo Station]] and the Yamanote Line was fully completed. The current platforms on the upper level were created in 1932 and the Sobu Line’s extension soon after made Akihabara an important transfer station between Tokyo and Chiba City.

Following World War II, a second [[Sobu Line]] tunnel was build to link [[Kinshicho]] and Tokyo because of considerable congestion in Akihabara. Later, another station was opened for the [[Hibiya Line]] in 1962 as well. Most recently, the [[Tsukuba Express Line]] terminal was opened in 2005 alongside the full remodeling of the rest of the station.

==Lines and Service==

Akihabara Station currently provides service to five different lines from three separate services. The following lines run through Akihabara Station:

The station is built with an above ground and below ground segment. The above ground part of the station consists of a cross-shaped platform set up with the Chuo-Sobu Line trains running east-west, and the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku Lines running north-south.
