Mount Fuji (also known as Fuji-san or 富士山) is a 3,776 meter tall stratovolcano, or composite volcano, located in Japan. It is one of the world's best known volcanoes. Mount Fuji is dormant, having last erupted in 1708. It has erupted at least 16 times since the 7th century AD. Mount Fuji has long been a symbol of Japan, appearing frequently in historical documents as well as in ancient and modern art. It also attracts outdoors enthusiasts from around the world, who come to climb the mountain or glide from one of the gliding ports. The mountain is open to climbers in July and August. There months are very hot, with extremely cold nights, so climbers should dress appropriately.
