Masakatsu Sashie is a Japanese painter. He was born in 1974 in Kanazawa. He graduated from the Kanazawa College of art and currently teaches there.

Artistic Style

While he has been painting since 1999, his work caught more national intention in 2005 at the Geisai art show. There he became known for what is often referred to as “Orb Paintings” which are very detailed paintings of these small orbs depicting various aspects of cities form Sashie’s childhood. The orbs are almost always hovering over a demolished city, but the city depicted in the orb itself is often intact, with various depictions of current city features of popular culture.

Though he is best known for his orb paintings, he does have a variety of other works, most often depicting some manmade object very large and also apparently hovering in the middle of the canvas, though it is rarely hanging over a city.

His most recent showcase is in “Under Florescent Light” which can be found in Los Angeles, California in the United States. It is his first North American art showcase and will only feature 12 paintings, but 2 of those paintings are his large orb work while the remaining 10 are some of his smaller paintings.
