Juliette et Justine is a Japanese fashion label and clothing brand. The brand, known as part of the “classic gothic Lolita” movement of clothing styles is best known for its interpretations of 18th and 19th century Victorian and Edwardian dresses from England and France, as well as the Rococo era dresses best known during the years prior to the French Revolution.

Inspiration

The clothing produced by Juliette et Justine combines a hybrid of different styles but mostly relies on entirely classical cuts. Dresses feature frills and plenty of layers while sporting multiple ribbons, laces, and cut sleeves and bodices. Paintings from the era, including those of Francois Boucher – the first painter for Luis XV – are used to inspire designs, while modern interpretations of Gothic Lolita are used to flesh out the variances between different lines.

Boucher was used by Madame de Pompadour during the years of Luis XV’s reign to paint her and her surroundings multiple times and he took several liberties, infusing the paintings with multiple different fantastical elements and features that were likely not present. Juliette et Justine utilizes both the reality of the era and the fiction in Boucher’s paintings in many of its designs to add decadence in new ways.

Where to Buy

Juliette et Justine brand clothing is available from its main store location in Amagasaki City in Hyogo, Japan. The brand is also carried in Tokyo in Atelier Piero, Atelier Clown, Kera Shop Angel, and Shop Pygmy Angel, as well as in multiple locations in Shizuoka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kyushu.

In addition to physical store fronts in Japan, Juliette et Justine clothing can be purchased from the company’s online store or through online import services such as Kaboodle.com for international shoppers.
