DressCamp is a Japanese fashion label and clothing line created by Toshikazu Iwaya. The line represents a combination of modern designs and stereotypes and classic, 1970s and 1980s themes. While at a glance the clothing often looks recycled, it is all within the confines of Iwaya’s subtle commentary on his subjects.

Label

The essence of DressCamp’s clothing is to create OTT themes and designs that harken to numerous specific time periods and eras in fashion design. For example, the 2007 S/S collection was “Disco Diva” and combined a wide array of 1970s clichés to ground its poster board of new designs and styles. Using patterns and styles from the era, DressCamp presented excessive, flaring clothing, hot pants, big hair, scarves, and halter tops in the women’s collection.

Men’s clothing was even more pronounced, drawing out overblown stereotypes by having men covered in fake tans and wearing skimpy shorts to mimic popular French designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier. This show, like many others utilized a combination of different overblown thematic points to showcase a subtly artistic new collection of clothing.

More recent examples of Iwaya’s work include theme’s taken from Japanese culture as in the 2008 S/S collection, drawing from recent Japanese history and the subtlety of everyday clothing styles.
