History and Overview

When Naoki Shirotani and Masao Ono created their Rip Van Winkle men's clothing line in 1997, they didn't have a specific brand concept. What they focused their attention on were quality materials and superior cutting and craftsmanship. This base has served them well, as Rip Van Winkle is among the hippest fashion brands in Japan. Their leather jackets are made to keep the body warm while looking stylish and being soft to the touch. Their pants and skirts are made to match as well.

Rip Van Winkle's trademark is their use of balance and unbalance in their designs. They use these elements for different purposes that create popular designs that are consumed by masses of young Japanese. Their jeans are massively popular as well. There are many young people in Japan who will wear Rip Van Winkle brand jeans every single day of the week.

Another important thing to note is that Shirotani and Ono's designs use largely neutral colors. Blacks, grays, and dark greens dominate this clothing line. Jackets are also a staple. Rip Van Winkle has a wide variety of jackets and coats, from long, trench coat styles to shorter jackets with faux fur around the edge of the hood.

Accessories are also available in this diverse clothing line. Jewelry, wallet chains, hats, gloves, and bags are all available in numerous designs. Though they, too, have a prevailing darker theme, they are stylish and go great with any casual look.

Rip Van Winkle has been around for over ten years now and the brand is still going strong. Shirotani and Ono's collaborative designs keep their brand's fans hooked.
