Major Airlines

There are 7 major airlines in Japan. They are:

Japan Airlines

Started in 1951, Japan Airlines was created as a response to World War II, when the Japanese decided that they need a form of reliable transportation air transportation in Japan. Since then it has become one of the largest airlines in all of Asia. Its leading competitor is All Nippon Airlines. The two of them account for the majority of all flights to and from Japan.

Major Airports

While there are dozens of Airports in Japan, there are only three major international airports. The first is the Narita International Airport in Tokyo, while the other two are Kansai International Airport (which serves Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto) and Chubu Centrair International Airport (which serves the Nagoya area). As far as domestic airports, the Tokyo International Airport is the largest (also known as the Haneda Airport) followed by the Osaka International Airport (also known the Itami Airport). The Tokyo International Airport is the busiest airport in all of Asia.

International Flights

Japan Airlines is the largest airline for international flights, followed by All Nippon Airways. There are airports for International flights all across Japan, but the three major international airports (Narita, Kansai and Chubu Centrair) account for the vast majority of passengers. The cost of international flights often varies not only by location but by ticket retailer, where some of the ticket sellers (like HIN) offer discounted prices, but they are usually only available in areas of cities with a high Japanese population.

Domestic Flights

Unlike International flights, All Nippon Airways currently has more domestic flights with Japan Airlines coming in second, though that has only been within recent years. Air Do, Skymark Airlines, Skynet Asia Airways, Ibex Airlines and Star Flyer offer several domestic flights, some at much cheaper prices than the other major airways because they only travel to and from a few locations.
